“Hang Out & Read” 2007 Summer
Reading Program was a success!

A lot of children, especially the readers came to the “Wrap-Up Party” on Saturday,
July 28, 2007, at the Hagåtña Main Library. Certificates and prizes were given out for the "Most Books Read" and the "Most Times Read". The children also enjoyed the breaking of the pinata. There were refreshments for everyone and a visit from
Clifford the Big Red Dog! If you did not come by that day, please visit your branch for your certificate and prize, or call Nora Cruz @475-4753 or 475-4754. You get a prize if you registered for the reading club before July 28, 2007.

 Another Successful Event!
The Dr. Seuss’ “Pajama
Birthday Party” was a success!!!
"THANK YOU" TO THE UNIVERSITY OF GUAM STUDENTS FROM DR. MARILYN JACKSON'S CLASS FOR THE STORYTELLING TIME, SHADOW PUPPET SHOW and SING-A-LONG!
Some were dressed in their favorite pajamas, wore a silly sock, or a red & white striped hat & a bow and joined us for some “GREEN EGGS & HAM” and “CAT IN THE HAT
CAKE!”
IT WAS FUN!!! HOPE TO SEE EVERYONE NEXT YEAR!!!! "THANK YOU" to the Guam Public Library System staff and volunteers for helping out with the preparations and cleaning afterwards.

Several GPLS employees were at the First Lady and the Guam Chamber of Commerce tree lighting ceremony at Skinner Plaza to help Santa and Mrs. Claus! The Bookmobile was even there!!!

made the Book Sale & Mini Carnival a success!
Books were selling FAST! The Carnival was a BLAST!!! KUDOS
to the GPLS Staff for all the preparations and the day of the GPLS Book Sale
& Mini Carnival in August. We had a
lot of volunteers and public agencies, including individuals and private
companies who assisted us, too! KUDOS
especially to the Hagatna Mayor and Staff, Dededo Mayor and Staff, Guam Fire
Department, Department of Corrections, Superior Court of Guam, South Pacific
Petroleum Corporation and the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company.
We especially want to thank our family and friends who
dropped by, including our neighbors on Martyr Street and the surrounding
businesses for being supportive. There is a long list....THANK YOU AGAIN!

Public Library System was at the GPO Bestseller July 20, 2007, for some fun before the book was
released! The magic began at 5:00 p.m. –
8:00 p.m. with Hermiones Readings, Weasley’s Arts & Crafts and Professor Trelawney’s Divination Sessions, which was a hit with both children and adults!

GPLS “Enchanted Story Hour”
GPLS hosted a Harry Potter “Enchanted Story Hour” with Bestseller on Saturday, August 4, 2007,
at the Nieves M. Flores Memorial Library in Hagatna. There were Harry Potter book readings and Arts & Crafts beginning at 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon with some treats!
Some came in their favorite costume! Who knows who was there.....

The last day for the Guam Public Library System (free) Computer "Mouse Academy" was on August 4, 2007. A BIG "Thank You" to Mrs. Vera F. Dela Cruz for a wonderful job in volunteering to teach!
We also want to say "Thank You" to the following for the computers donated to make it possible to hold the classes. They are the Rotary Club of Guam; and the Citigroup with KGTF.
The children were given certificates for "Mousin’ Around" with us during the summer at the library. Congratulations kids and for a job well done!

They learned to: Discover Windows XP and getting to know computer hardware; Review Windows basics. Begin
Microsoft Word basics: opening software, saving, printing, and formatting; More Word basics; Begin Microsoft Excel basics: opening software, saving,
printing, formatting, spreadsheet operations, and inserting graphics; Microsoft PowerPoint basics: create fun and educational slide presentations
for all occasions; and Internet Explorer basics and surfing safely.
There were some requirements and that included getting a
GPLS Library Card. So the next time you visit a GPLS public library, apply for a library card, you never know what classes might be offered the next time around!
